Appleby was the County Town of Westmorland and when the counties changed Appleby then became Appleby-in-Westmorland to preserve the Westmorland name.  The Carlisle to Settle line runs through Appleby.  Appleby also has its own Castle, which is open to the public at certain times where there is access to the Keep and the grounds.  We must not forget the Appleby Horse Fair which takes place in the first week of June, only the disaster of 2001 prevented it being held that year, Travellers come from everywhere for that one week to trade horses and see friends.

For the energetic there are plenty of walks, the Tourist Office in Appleby has an ample supply of leaflets; there are red squirrels, deer and a myriad of wildlife to be seen.

Penrith is a bustling Market Town and holds an Open Air Market every Saturday where bargain of every description can be found.  Penrith is just off Junction 40 and is the gateway to the Lakes. There is also a main railway station
