For the energenic there are plenty of walks, the lucky walker may be privileged to see the Red Squirrel, Deer and perhaps the badger to mention but a few of the varied wild life to be found in this beautiful area. There is also the coast to coast walk which is a few miles away.
No visit to the area would be complete without a visit to Appleby, the Castle sitting above the Town is open to the public, and the grounds are home to various rare breeds. Appleby also has its own Railway Station as part of the Carlisle Settle Line. Appleby is world famous for the Annual Horse Fair.
Penrith is a busy bustling Market Town. The Auction becomes an Open Air Market every Saturday where many bargains may be found. There is also a railway station. Junction 40 on the M6 is the gateway to the Lakes.
If any guests wish to look around the buildings and see the animals I would be glad to take them around, please remember your wellies or old shoes as the ground is likely to be muddy (after all we are a working farm!).
There are some local pubs serving evening meals and Carol will be only too pleased to advise you on places to eat. Evening meals are available a Trainlands, these have to be pre-booked and the menu is limited but all homemade. There are also homemade jams for sale subject to availability
Appleby was the County Town of Westmorland and when the counties changed Appleby then became Appleby-in-Westmorland to preserve the Westmorland name. The Carlisle to Settle line runs through Appleby. Appleby also has its own Castle, which is open to the public at certain times where there is access to the Keep and the grounds. We must not forget the Appleby Horse Fair which takes place in the first week of June, only the disaster of 2001 prevented it being held that year, Travellers come from everywhere for that one week to trade horses and see friends.

If guests would like to look around the farm and see the animals please ask, we would be glad to show you around, in summer it will generally be the calves, most of the older animals will be at summer grazing. Cows are milked twice a day, 7.00am and 4.00pm . Please bring an old pair of shoes or wellies; the ground is likely to be muddy (after all we are a working farm!)
